Nothing else seems to matter when you are travelling through a local winery. After working in the Wine Industry in Australia and experiencing some very unique and delicious wines from all different regions in the land down under, I was excited to come home to Canada and see how our famous Niagara Wine Region compared. Lucky enough to have a sister living only a stones through away in St. Catherines, we packed up the family Ford and headed down to the famous Ice Wine Region.

And that it is indeed. Our first stop was at Jackson-Triggs, a fairly famous and fairly large Winery in the region. We happen to know a VIP at JT’s who was able to take some time out of her busy schedule and sit with us to show and share some of the very nice Winery Only Wines. A Big thank-you to Glenna Collins for all of her time, and all of her great information about the wine and the region that day. Our favorites were the 2006 Meritage, 2006 Syrah and the yet to be released 2007 Gewürztraminer

Other places we visited and enjoyed were:
And finally we ended off our Saturday night with a trip to a local microbrewery called Taps Brewhouse and Grill where they actually served meals with Beer. Although they didn’t do a sampling option for the beer, the server was nice enough to bring us out a couple of samples to try of the following beers:
My family chose our favorite and decided that we should order a pitcher… but not just any pitcher, because in my family, we can’t just stop after one… so we figured it’s “go big or go home” and we got the 5.5L pitcher that actually has an iceblock down the middle to make sure you beer stays cold while you make your way through the jug. Best part is… it even has a “tap!”

Not to mention the food at this place was awesome! The main thing that caught my eye was a fresh piece of Salmon, served with Vanilla Wheatberry sauce, a wheatberry starch and some warm beetroot.

These wheatberry were perfectly round, a lot more al dente in texture and a great thing to have in an ailhouse! All I could think about is how good a wheatberry risotto would taste….. hmm….imagine the possibilities!
